-Derek Walcott, The Sea is HistoryThey called the sea kal pani, black water. To cross it was a rupture, a separation from the land, from culture, from caste, to be forever outside, forever a nomad. This was the journey of my ancestors, as slaves and indentured laborers, from India and China and Africa. Even as farmers, intimately connected to the land, their descendants’ feet would wander. This wandering became another rupture: my mother and her siblings’ migration to the United States. What are we, the generation that exists in the wake of estrangement, to make of the pieces? Acres of rice farm in a country we rarely visit, a creek, and in between: a farmhouse my grandfather built by hand.
Motion sickness: a disconnect between what is seen and what is felt. A cognitive dissonance, a type of metaphor that exists in the body, viscerally. Perhaps this is a sickness we all feel as we carry the legacy of pasts that exist in fragments, in erasures, volumes locked in the sea. Perhaps we can find solidarity in our un-moored-ness, as we stand side by side, casting our nets, examining the flotsam that returns.
Kal Pani is this casting, this examination. The video footage was shot in 2011 in my mother’s native country of Guyana, a former British colony in South America that borders the Caribbean both geographically and culturally. The spoken text of the video was gleaned from writing projects over the past few years, exploring the connections and ruptures of place, treating the fractures within personal histories and marginal traditions as generative spaces to explore larger historical, political, and cultural issues.Airing September 4 – 6, 2015

17:15“Maria TV, interweaves documentation of the everyday activities of Latinas that work as domestic workers with reenactments of their jobs as portrayed in soap operas and movies. I direct reenactments of their roles as they are portrayed on TV interwoven with clips of various telenovelas to create an hybridized narrative. The all-women cast perform for the camera both as the ‘seen on TV’ characters, and as themselves – representing their own stories, their own lives. Playing out like a dress rehearsal of sorts, in combining these materials a slippery space is opened up – one that sits ambiguously between action and enactment, or ‘real life’ and fiction. In doing so, my aim is to evidence and critique the blind-spots in media representation, and at the same time address an under-represented group’s socioeconomic struggles in an engaging and intimate yet playful way.” -RV

On Our Way to Tomorrow
In 2011, as part of the exhibition Without You I’m Nothing: Art and its Audience, artist Kirsten Leenaars produced On Our Way to Tomorrow, a soap opera based on real-life drama that was filmed on location using MCA staff and visitors as the core actors and extras. While the characters are fully fictionalized, scripts and improvisations were based on their actual positions at the museum. The series exist out of 13 episodes, total running time 162:30 min.In a global city in the middle of America a museum for contemporary art is in search of her identity. Just what is it that makes this museum so different, so appealing? Which people really determine what is happening? Power struggles, affairs, greed, a passion for the arts, the ghost of a collection, a lost child, aspiring artists, ambitious curators, alert assistants, demanding board members, the mysterious custodian and amorous administrators all have their own motivations to shape the museum’s future. What is the story behind the returning mother, the mysterious phone messages, the missing chief curator, the adopted artist and the shooting at the museum, who is going to win the museum’s next curator competition? The videos incorporate elements of drawing, sculpture and performance, portraying women obscured by water-coloured pillow cases in different suburban situations. The audio track accompanying the videos is a voiceover of the artist reading a fractured and dreamlike prose poem.

Tele-novela is a genre of limited-run drama series popular on Latin American, Portuguese, and Spanish television networks. The term combines tele, short for televisión or televisão (Spanish and Portuguese words for television), and novela, a Spanish and Portuguese word for “novel”. Symbolic, social, or technological, Tele-novela mimics the serial and structural nature of the pop cultural programs, but moves from linear story to abstracted narrative, and experimental play by electronic means. Arranged in three-part acts and ranging in media–video, sound, animated GIFs–and durational formats, the sequential productions on ACRE TV present a departure from their operatic tradition in favor of abstracted realities and dispersed fictions that simultaneously explore
and avoid the notion of formal narrative on screen.
